UPC (Universal
Product Code) Information
UPC bar coding can be a confusing process for newer companies looking
to find a way for their wholesalers or retailers to manage inventory.
There are a lot of misleading sites that only provide partial information
on UPC codes and their influence with large retail organizations. Due
to cost implications associated with getting a universal product code
that is unique to an individual company, many smaller manufacturers
choose to purchase from resellers with prices ranging from $30-$169.
What many smaller manufactures, and what UPC resellers often forget
to mention, is the company code (the first 6-9 digits in the UPC code
sequence) are not unique to the individual company. Instead this UPC
company code is the same as the reseller's company. In certain instances,
purchasing through a reseller can present significant cost savings,
and in some cases, a reseller UPC may all that is needed. For instance,
a company that does not deal with large retailers that needs to track
inventory. For companies planning on selling directly to large retail
chains or those that may eventually sell to larger retail chains, it
is recommended they go ahead and get a unique UPC code with a company
code that identifies their own company. These can be purchased through
GS-1 US, formerly known as
the Uniform Code Council. ASC is willing to assist new companies through
the UPC generation and assignment process.
UPC Barcode Printing
Once a company has been assigned a UPC code, ASC can assist in printing
the labels. Primarily specializing in adhesive labels, ASC can provide
companies with preprinted labels that are ready to apply or apply the
labels in house - saving time and money. A crucial element of UPC printing
is that each UPC label is verified prior to labeling. ASC scans each
UPC code printed to ensure quality prior to labeling products or shipping
labels.
